Fifth grade at Wakarusa Elementary becomes a transition year between the elementary school and the middle school. Fifth graders are given more opportunities to be involved in school activities. The fifth graders are involved in switching classes. This gives the students an idea of what school will be like in the middle school.Fifth graders are given freedom and responsibilities that the other classes do not yet have. With this new freedom and responsibility the students must become organized and able to complete all assignments in a timely manner and set good examples for the younger students.
Fifth grade will feature the following academic subjects and activities:
MATH
The use of the four basic operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals will be studied.
- Problem Solving
- Measurement
- Geometry
- Reasoning
- Probability/Statistics
LANGUAGE ARTS
- All classes stress reading for enjoyment and comprehension.
- Each student will read trade books of their own choice as well as stories that the teachers choose.
- Writing in complete sentences.
- Basic parts of speech.
- Correct use of grammar.
- Spelling as a tool for more effective writing
SOCIAL STUDIES
We will concentrate on the history and geography of the United States and Europe.

- Outlining
- Map Skills
SCIENCE\HEALTH
The following units will be studied:
- Living Things
- Life Cycles
- Adaptations
- Ecology
- Motion
- Electrical Energy
- Human Body
- Nutrition
With each of these units, there will be many hands on activities and experiments.
